Frida Kahlo – a nod to the culture of Santa Barbara

NAME OF CLIENT: The Santa Barbara Arts District
NAME OF PIECE: Chillaxin’ with Frida
SIZE OF PIECE: 12’ x 22’
MATERIALS: Tempera Paint and Chalk on Pavement

I recently spent time creating a new painting in support of the Santa Barbara Arts District, the Children’s Creative Project and our beloved I Madonnari Festival.

This intervention symbolized the best of the Arts District with a preview of what to look forward to at I Madonnari this weekend. This painting was designed to honor the intersection of art, music, performance, quality culinary offerings and retail therapy – all in a culturally vibrant neighborhood which includes the Arlington Theater, the Granada Theater, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Center Stage Theater, & The Lobero Theater.

Indicating the vibrant & rich Hispanic culture of Santa Barbara, I chose Frida Kahlo, a woman known for her strength and talent, as my central theme.

I haven’t actually been down on the pavement in a while but it sure felt like home!! It’s good to be back!

Thanks to the very kind support from the above organizations and especially Opan Restaurant and Bar for taking such good care of me and the painting!
