3D Street Art NYC: An Immersive Anamorphic Lazy River at Flatiron Plaza
Tracy Lee Stum created a large-scale 3D anamorphic lazy river street painting for Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge activation at Flatiron Plaza in New York City
Making Waves in Manhattan!
When it comes to 3D street art, NYC offers an extraordinary urban canvas. For this Disney installation, I transformed Manhattan’s iconic Flatiron Plaza into an unexpected aquatic adventure!
Situated near the recognizable Flatiron Building, the artwork invited visitors to step into an optical illusion and become part of the scene. The installation brought a playful lazy river experience into the heart of New York City, creating an engaging opportunity for audience participation and photography.
Bringing a Lazy River to Life
Using specialized anamorphic perspective techniques, I created the illusion of a flowing blue waterway. Working with the production team, the project integrated inflatable tubes, rocky edges, and lush landscaping to complete the scene.
Because these artworks are designed from a specific viewing position, the flat painted surface appeared to transform into a dimensional lazy river landscape. As a result, visitors could imagine themselves floating along a lazy river in the middle of Manhattan
Our goal was to maximize audience participation, inviting visitors to pose for photographs, interact with the artwork, and share their experiences. Because playful interaction is central to my work, the audience easily became an essential part of the composition.
Interactive Art Meets Experiential Marketing
The Disney Lakeshore Lodge installation demonstrates how 3D street art in NYC can transform familiar urban spaces into engaging environments for visitors to experience.
Beyond the visual illusion, the project highlights interactive street art’s potential for experiential marketing and brand storytelling. Rather than simply viewing an advertisement, audiences become active participants in a memorable visual experience.
In addition, the artwork creates opportunities for photography and social sharing. Subsequently, these interactions can extend an installation’s reach beyond its physical location.
Transforming Public Spaces Through Art
The installation was presented at Flatiron Plaza, one of Manhattan’s recognizable public spaces within the Flatiron NoMad district. Flatiron Plaza offered a distinctive setting for this project. Its recognizable architecture and lively public environment provided an exciting backdrop for the illusion.
Ultimately, the installation demonstrates how anamorphic street painting can bring creativity, playfulness, and unexpected experiences into everyday urban spaces.
From public plazas to international brand activations, my work explores the possibilities of perspective, audience participation, and immersive visual storytelling.
