HOW DO YOU MAKE A 3D STREET PAINTING COME TO LIFE?
….by using 3D with Augmented Reality (AR) to create another layer of engagement to your street painting!

My latest creation was an exercise in discipline, creativity and experience – all the traits a pro like me has honed in the 16+ years that I’ve been drawing on the street. I like a good challenge – so when I was invited to participate in the ‘Living Arts Fest’ in Bangkok, Thailand this past month, I decided to take my work one step further by installing a complex ‘4d’ image for the public.
This years festival has asked that we design an image using the ‘Treasure Hunt’ theme. I love a good treasure hunt and have enjoyed many years as a child either creating or involving myself in various games of ‘treasure hunting’ – lost cities of gold, unimaginable riches, dangerous booby traps, etc. The imagination can run wild in these sorts of play scenarios, which is something I still bring to my current work as a 3D / 4D street painter. My design for this painting centered on the iconic treasure hunter who is just on the verge of discovering the magical lost treasure.
Using classic scenes from adventure treasure seeker films as inspiration, I started with an Aztec temple design, highlighting a precarious passage to reach the desired destination, which is a huge sun disc alter. Once the treasure hunter is on the path, the room he or she has entered mysteriously begins to come to life – torches become lit, the pathway begins to crumble and the real treasure is revealed to all. I have studied mysterious & historical cultural oddities from around the world and have included one such real mystery as the actual treasure in my painting. However, just when you thought it was easy to get to the treasure, a clue is revealed announcing the arrival of your nemesis, who is right on your heals in the race to find the treasure first.
With the ‘Temple of Gold / Temple of Skulls’ painting, I’ve created an immersive interactive ‘4D’ street painting (using Augmented Reality) which allows viewers to be the hero treasure hunter and see the painting come to life, right before their very eyes!
I couldn’t have done this without the contributions of my support team: Augmented Reality by interFuel, Justin Williams and Team 3D artist, Julio César Jimenez. Thanks to everyone at ‘Living Arts Festival’ for a wonderful experience in Bangkok!
