Epic E3 in 3D – that’s how it felt this year when the Electronic Entertainment Expo brought the best in gaming to the industry and fans of gaming. I was excited to participate when Snapdragon asked me to come down and create a unique work of 3D Chalk Art for the event at their awesome Qualcomm Snapdragon Lounge.
Guillermo del Toro’s new film ‘ Pacific Rim’ was a focal point of the lounge as a brand new trailer was featured in a mini theater built just for this presentation. Pacific Rim features robotic jaeger’s battling monsters from the deep – a la Ishirō Honda’s Godzilla – and I was asked to create a vertical 3D chalk art piece to celebrate the films theme.
In the film the robotic jaegers are piloted by 2 individuals, a left brain pilot and a right brain pilot, which made for a very cool trailer seen in the lounge theater. I chose a jaeger called ‘Striker Eureka’ (I liked the arms on this one) and designed the piece to appear as if the jaeger were breaking through a wall depicting one of the film’s movie posters. Working live during the show was a treat since I was able to interact with all the show visitors that stopped by.
Guillermo del Toro stopped by to discuss the film and told me his 13 year old daughter loves 3D street painting – so cool! Speed painter David Garibaldi was on hand for some dramatic energetic art performances as well League of Legends gaming team champions TSM. Snapdragon put on an awesome event at E3 this year. Gotta send a big shout out to everyone at Qualcomm and Zebra Partners for bringing me over to draw in LA! Loved it:-)
