I had the wonderful pleasure to participate as an invited artist at the 1st Annual ‘Colors of St. Petersburg’ Street Painting Festival this summer. I had traveled to St. Petersburg in 2010 and was excited about returning to draw with the national artists. I used this opportunity to present my work via a 3D street painting master class for participants, and a hands on workshop painting with a crew of local artists who proved to be not only talented, but great fun to spend some time with! With only 2.5 days to create the image we got to work very quickly making great progress by Saturday night, only to find our efforts 75% washed away (despite protective measures) by rains the following Sunday. My crew was disappointed but being the eternal optimist, I rallied them on, waiting for the sun to arrive in time for us to complete the work and enjoy the fruits of our labors.
The national artists were simply terrific – artists from not only Russia, but also the Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan, who put their all into their drawings with amazing results. Imagination and intelligence best describes the fantastic drawings completed. Popular themes included gaming & fantasy images as well as big anamorphic pieces. To add flavor to the event the festival boasted all sorts of street attractions for visitors to enjoy.
The great turnout (half of St. Petersburg) was tremendous and certainly proved that yes, street painting is popular in Russia! My lovely hostesses, Elizabeth, Jane and team, certainly made me feel very welcome and took great care of me while I was visiting. Hats off to the ‘Colors of St. Petersburg’ for an amazingly successful first event. I hope it continues for many years to come!
