Artist - Julio Jiminez
It was at age 14 that Julio Jimenez took interest in art to complete high school credit. Unbeknownst to him, that art class would be the turning point in his life in which art would become his career.
As fate would have it, he met and then befriended Burbank’s well-known street painter and artist, Randall Williams when he visited Williams’ studio to have one of his drawings framed. After viewing Jimenez’s talents on paper, Williams encouraged him to exercise his talent by introducing him to an advanced level of artistry using chalk on concrete.
Since then, chalk has been one of Jimenez’s preferred mediums. He quickly began to receive much attention, commission requests from local businesses and advertising agencies. Nearing his graduation from the Art Institute of California-Los Angeles, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts and Animation (2006), he continued to pursue the chalk medium by participating in as many street painting circuits throughout Southern California as possible. At the Art Institute of CA-LA, he was trained to use computer programs that assist him with previewing his ideal blueprints for his upcoming street paintings.
As his career in street painting continued to evolve, in 2009 he met world renowned street painter Tracy Lee Stum at a festival near Chicago. Since then, Jimenez has collaborated with Tracy on numerous projects locally and around the world.
Throughout the years, Jimenez has fine-tuned his skills in painting as the industry transformed from chalk to acrylic paint. Jimenez continues to take online courses to continue to perfect his craft to contribute to personal & professional projects. During the pandemic in 2020, Jimenez learned a new skill in 3D modelling to amplify his ability to tell stories through his creations.
Julio Jimenez has been Street Painting since 2005 and has accumulated an eclectic portfolio of over 500 pieces: drawing automobiles, to portraits, to buildings, to renditions of masterpieces, to 3D anamorphic, to food, to animals etc. participating in festivals, corporate gigs, city events in the US and around the world.
Artist’s Statement:
“My chalk conversations speak from imagination, beauty & playfulness through imagined and referenced sources, with nods toward art history, personal history, contemporary cultural iconography & global cultural influences. Perception, geometry, lighting, color and movement are essential to my work – as much as accessing my intuitive impulses. In choosing this unorthodox manner in which to communicate with others, I have surely found a suitable medium to express my visions of mind and heart.”
